Geez… After hearing some of the other prices you guys are posting, I started to think that we’re getting shafted up here in the Great NW. So for the heck of it I just called Eastside Harley in Bellevue. Service department is closed on Monday’s, but the parts guy told me that the 1K service for an Ultra is $475. Ouch!!! Had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn’t April 1st.

Oh well, I guess it’s their business so they can charge whatever they like. I figure that the savings on doing my own service will go towards the cost of the new dog. His name will be Jack and he’s a pure-bread Pitbull from Springville, Tennessee. Doesn’t eat, doesn’t bark, doesn’t bite and will live in the garage, They put’em in a crate and shipped him out this morning.

Congrats! May I suggest Mobil 1 syn 15-50W in the one gallon jug at any autoparts store. Also the Mobil 1 syn 75-140 gear lube. Anything will do for the primary, but I still use the Mobil 1 just to keep it simple.

Get a good oil filter removal tool. to grip the top of the oil filter and be prepared to have a little spillage from the dripping of the oil filter outlet, ..it's messy.

You really do the lube with the bike on the ground. No need for a jack, but the jack will come in handy for many other things, like all the nice accessories you get to install saving all that money to have a high school kid use your bike as a learning experiment.

Learned a neat little trick from someone here on the forum. Wish I remembered who so I could give the proper credit.

Take an empty 2 Liter plastic pop bottle. Cut off the bottom with a razor knife. Then make a single slice lengthwise down only the widest diameter part of the bottle. Leave the top screwed on the bottle. Makes a nice trough / funnel gizmo that you can slip up under the oil filter and outlet before removal to catch the small amount of spillage.

That's pretty high, I let the dealer do my 1000, but it was $249 total.

Hey I plan on doing my own service on my 2009 RKC but I have only worked on my 82 Suzuki. What different tools do I need for a Harley?
You will probably need a set of SAE sockets(standard and deep) and wrenches. SAE allen wrenches and the one thing I did not have alot of is torxs bits and drivers. Although I do find a few metric nuts and bolts on the bike, more than I would have thought.

Thieves! Neidengard's HD in Wintersville, OH first service is $200, and they don't miss a thing. Dealers charging more are an outright rip off.....that's why I traveled to Ohio to buy my newest bike, and will do it agin, and again. My local dealer sucks azz.
