Not if you document everything and keep all your receipts.

Good for you! I like to wrench on my bike (within my abilities) and I have been put off by the dealers charging high prices for everything. I understand that they have to make a profit but I see the attitude that 'we are the only game in town for service' and we will charge the price and that's it.

Check around for a good independent and get to know them for when something arises that may be a bit much to tackle (or is a pain in the a$$, like changing my rear tire..). A lot of indy shops want the business and want repeat business and word of mouth and customer satisfaction is a great motivator for good service.

Plan on letting the dealer do the 1K since I'm having them do the Intake, SERT and Pipes. But I will be doing them after that......

I started to do all my maintenance after I bought my SG. It is very satisfying work and definitely not hard. It's also given me an opportunity to add a few new tools to my tool chest.

I changed the fluids myself and took the "$50 off your 1,000 mile service" coupon the dealer sent me. The $275 service cost $68. I'll either do it myself or have an Indy up the road do it from now on.

I just picked up 7 qts. of syn-3 a HD filter and plan on doing my 1k this week. It's really childs play, If you can change the oil in your truck you can do the bike. It still ran me 90 bucks for the parts, it's the labor that'll kill ya.

160.00 from the local indy shop here, including hd oil and filter. They do work for almost all the harley's in my area since nearest dealer is 75 miles away, and I go to church with the owner.

Good for you doing your own preventative maintenance! Glad to hear you also purchased a quality jack to boot. I let the dealer do the 1,000 mile & 5,000 mile service plus Stage 1 & SERT service.

I purchased a Service Manual, Electrical and Parts Manual and discovered basically all I was getting from dealer was fluid changes plus filter for my dollars (other than SERT/DYNO early on). Purchased a quality jack and turned to along with a few more tools to the war chest and started doing it all myself. I also have the 5yr extended warranty.

Amazing the savings I'm getting plus getting to know my bike. Taking the wheels off this spring with ABS was a breeze! Had an indy mount and balance the new tires. Saved almost $300 doing it all myself.

If you have the right tools, follow the manual, motivation & incentive I believe you'll be fine and save a considerable amount of change over the years.

Good for you. I think dealers are trying to make up the loss in sales in the service dept. Charging 400 is ridiculous
. Why do they think we were born yesterday???

That is more that my 10,000 service that included the plugs and new brakes. Cool to do your own but i would still look for a deal that wants your business.
