I read a review of the ABS somewhere and the writer agreed that a professional rider in controlled conditions could stop better without ABS. He went on to say that he IS a professional rider but that the street is not a controlled situation and that he had ABS on his primary personal ride. Good enough for me - I like having them. Y'all do what you want.

Once ABS saves your bacon, you'll never buy a new bike without it again. I think that when many of these threads are started questioning ABS, it is many times a prospective buyer trying to justify (in his or her mind) not spending the several hundred $$ on the ABS option. Not to say that is the case here, but many times it is. Sure it's costly as an option but a small price to pay once it saves your azz. What's the old saying? Pay me now or pay me later.... But one way or another you'll pay for your decision.

It isn't even a debate for me. When I buy a new bike it WILL have ABS. Just too much data out there to support having it. Particularly on wet, slick, gravel, types of situations. The debate may go on, but it's over for me. ABS is the only way to go on a new scoot.

A sales guy at the dealer told me that ABS promotes sloppy braking/driving and would not recommend it. I got it anyway. I guess I'm a sloppy driver

I haven't experienced this problem. I intentionally activated the ABS in a parking lot several days ago.....showing a group how fast it would stop from 30 mph, then 40 mph and then 50 mph. Very, very quick stops without any issues.

The 09 is an incredable bike with the new chassis. Definately get the ABS (I know of a number of people that have gone down over the years, because of wheels locking up in a panic situation, braking in gravel, etc.).

At this point in your decision making, I'd wait another 100 days and see what the 2010 MY brings. I know there are going to be some big changes again.

There were about fifteen bikes in our ride today and Terrie said that the ABS activated in some gravel when there was a quick stop at a four way intersection (half the pack rode through after the lead bikes stopped......she thought everbody was going to ride through, when the rider in front of her decided to stop). She was very grateful!

Its not the same as doing a fake emergency stop. When I tested out the ABS in a straight line on an abandoned road it stopped quick and somewhat predictably. When I am coming into a turn around 30 mph like a sweeping offramp type deal if I hit anykind of rut/lip whatever it engages tighter then releases and because you are in a turn it throws your weight off physics i guess and makes you feel like your going to go over. Im' not talking about an emergency braking manuever. just normal decel above 30mph or even slower pulling into a parking lot it senses the incline, dip loose gravel who knows and causing a pulsating. only lasts a second or two.

As dumb as that sounds, I think it is true for cagers around here. They think just because they have ABS, they can stop on dime. If they ever had to drive the old cars with those useless bias ply tires on ice.....those were the days..lol

I'm a young guy and when I started driving I didnt have ABS. Now its standard on every car. Pretty soon that will be standard on motorcycles. I brake as if I didnt have ABS on my SG.

I have ABS on my 09 and would not be without it. There is a reason it has been standard on Police bikes for years now......ask a cop who rides...and the 09s, like said, are Rock Solid IMO

Wish my bike had ABS, but it doesn't. Like said by some earlier it will help anybody to take your bike to an empty lot to practice emergency braking. This will also help you get familiar to abs if you have not had it before. Always good to know how long it will take your own bike to stop (with or without abs) so you can better judge your riding distance and cornering approach.

This info from:http://www.ibmwr.org/prodreview/abstests.html

Figure 2. Comparative Braking Distances by Motorcycle
(Average of Five Passes on Dry Pavement)
Expert rider, all distances from 60 mph

BMW
(non-ABS model) 153 ft
Full ABS Control 162 ft
ABS disabled 155 ft

Honda

Full ABS Control 156 ft
ABS disabled 150 ft

Yamaha

Full ABS Control 152 ft
ABS disabled 148 ft
