The best I coax out of Ol Sally here is 37mpg with all stock stuff. After the mods(see sig) is 36 to 35mpg.
I don't hot rod. Shift at 3 grand. Cruise on the highway in 6th between 70 and 75 mph@ around 2500-2700 rpm. I won't "lug it" Stay mostly between 2500 and 3000. Ride solo. Around 240 lbs.(Many years of beers). So why no better on the gas mileage? Other than that she runs great. Any thing I should look for?
Quit resting your foot on the brake pedal.

Gosh I dont know what all the complaining is about I barely break 30 MPG and have never seen anywhere near 40MPG. Now I have really only ridden around town and have not done any long highway road trip but still my mileage appears much lower than other on around town riding. Still double what I get in my car and a heck of a lot more fun.

1. I don't want to stop any more than I have to for gas.
2. I spent all that money, now I don't have as much for gas.
3. Cost of gas is OK now, but wait until it goes back up to $4 or $5 a gallon.
4. Don't want to import any more oil than we have to.
5. More often you refuel the more gas vapors go into the air and form ground level ozone.

ding...ding...ding... We have a winner.

10% corn fuel kills MPG. Think of adding 10% to a 36 MPG ride. You would almost get 40 MPG. Why not use an octane boost? Corn is corn, octane boost will not change corn to petroleum.

My truck used to average 16 MPG but with the 10% corn I am only getting 14.

Just my .02

Corn was meant to be eaten, not burned! Highly inefficient and 'we the people' are subsidizing the industry even though it is not worthwhile or profitable.

ugh!

One thing you need to be careful of is comparing 'apples' to 'oranges'. In reading these posts, first thing I do is look at what bike is being talked about (btw, always mention your bike when talking any performance). My '09 ultra definately gets fewer mpg than my '07 did. Same setup, same rider, same conditions. What bike matters.

LYAO if you like. I'm sure you are one of the ones that doesn't believe anything any one tells you. You know everything already. No, I'm not kidding. Think about all the people doing the little things each and every day, and then add that up. We're talking millions of people refueling everyday! People only think in terms they are familiar with and don't think about the enormity of it all.

here is a good comparison for you a kawasaki klr650 gets 50 mpg the hd 96 is almost three times the motor, so if your getting 50 mpg or near that on a 96 you are probably running very lean and making that motor run alot hotter than it should and could be doing some damage in the long run, me i will except the 38 mpg and a cooler running motor. but it would be cool to have a TOURING bike that would get 50mpg consistantly and run cool enough to not create damage over time. wake up hd =D
