Why can't I get 45 MPG like everyone else?

I've read several reports of fuel mileage increasing on '07 and later models by not using 6th gear as much. The motor seems to get in a "happy" place at a little higher cruise rpm. Doesn't cost anything to try it, drop it down to 5th. It worked for a friend of mine who rides a 2007 UC. But I still get better fuel mileage than him with my 88" / 5 speed.

I have an '08 EGC with the 103", SE255 cams, Rush 1.75 mufflers, SERT with the recommended map and no dyno tune. I get 40-43 most all the time, occasionally dropping to 38 in town with a bit of hot rodding. On my Sturgis trip last year of 3,000 miles, I averaged 43 over the whole trip. 2,00 mile of that was with a really heavily loaded bike.
I can't believe the stories of 50+ mpg, sounds impossible to me.

Mine goes as many miles as I can until it don't have no more gas, then I put more in it. It's way better than my Jeep and I like riding it better than driving. If I was concerned about gas mileage, HD would not have been my choice. If fuel economy is an issue, I would consider a Vespa or another smaller bike. Looking for excellent fuel economy out of a bagger is kinda like expecting good mileage out of a Ford Expedition, there are more economical rides out there. As far as those high 40s-low 50s out there, I figured they trailered to the vacation spot, rode around, trailered home, then counted the miles for the whole trip, trailer miles included.

Same here. I stay in 5th until at least 65. Get around 40 that way. If I go to 6th, it drops to 36 or 37. But like others have said, I'm not too worried about mpg. I just like to ride and not stop every 100 miles for gas.

My '07 SG (96/6sp w/Stage 1 and PC III) averaged 36.8, with a high of 44.1 haulin' *** back from Milwaukee at 75-80 (but ALL highway riding).
My new Ultra only has 700 miles on her, and I'm only averaging 33.4 thus far. I just changed the stock pipes out for Monster Ovals, so we'll see if things improve as the engine breaks in some more.
I've got a buddy that rode to Milwaukee with me last year, when we stopped for gas he had to put just as much in as me (meaning he was getting similar mileage), but he still insists he get 45-50 mpg and has a cruising range of 220 miles (with a 5 gallon tank!).
Mileage claims are kind of like fishing stories...
