Why can't I get 45 MPG like everyone else?

I decided when I got my SG last year to leave it stock. Yesterday I rode 104 miles and stopped to fill because a friend needed gas, did the math with 2.2 gals to fill and came up with 47.27 mpg. That is one up riding and averaging about 65 mph. I have been able to get close to 50mpg sometimes. I'm leaving it stock, it's fast enough for me.

My RK with 95", PCIII and 98HP with 102 Torque, consistently averages 42-46mpg. My wifes stock Deluxe gets 48-52mpg.
I check the fuel economy quite often. A drop in average mileage is an indication something is not quite right. Last year my wife's Deluxe dropped to about 42mpg. Pulled the plugs and they were terrible. New plugs and she's back to 48-52mpg. She told me that her bike had an occasional miss, after the fact.....

Some scoff at mileage claims of 45-50, but this is obtainable with an EFI controller and under the right conditions. I routinely get in the upper-40's, as high as 50 on occasion, while riding the backroads at 50-55mph. Up the speed to 60mph and mileage goes down to maybe 48, 65mph to 46-47, 70mph to 45, etc. Got 48 on a ride last week cruising the backroads usually at about 60mph. Riding in the city always puts me at 40mpg or below, as low as 35 in cold weather.
It all depends on conditions and tuning. I had a PCIII for over two years and had it tweaked well for mileage without affecting WOT performance. Now with the PCV-AT I can specify AFR's and the job is much easier, now at 14.5:1 in the cruise range after a cam change three weeks ago and mileage hasn't changed significantly if at all. I'd like to get 50mpg consistently but I don't think it is possible on this bike.

Old96,
Did you have your bike tuned? I see you have a few goodies and I wonder if the tuner didn't do a good job.
I have an '09 with a 103" Stage III and BUB 7's and I'm averaging (current) 43.97 m.p.g.
If you have the ability to get it re-tuned, I would suggest you do so because it doesn't sound like the job was done right, though I am by no means a mechanic. You might PM Dawg or HarleyTuner for advice/suggestions (there are others too, but I can't remember their names, sorry).
Good Luck!
