Question

Well thats what I'll do call Dealer tomarrow see what they think...Use Lynchburg Harley they do a good job as far as Dealers go.......don't think they will give me the runaround......wish I could afford a HQ113 then this day might not have been so Bad...thanks for all the responses.

Good idea on reporting to ins co...might need them if it is toast...do you think they will pay for a 113....just kidd'in but great call on ins I'll call him to tomarrow.

Put new filter on (tighten this time), fill with new oil, then fire her up and listen to how she runs. A compression test would tell you if the cylinders and rings are ok and noise will tell you if the crank, etc., got fried. Let us know what you learn and good luck!

Yes, all reputable ins co's insure for valdalism, road hazzards, or a major accident involved with the insured bike. A destroyed motor caused by sudden oil loss from a vandalized, or some other extraneously caused event upon the oil filter (such as hitting a road hazzard) would be a claim paid to you to help make you whole again. The problem is the 20k miles you have on the motor. They may say that your avg motor life is 100,000, and you have used 20%, therefore the payout will be only 80% of the new motor cost and mechanic's labor. Any additional upgrading you want, such as a 113"er, would be of course on you. Advise them of your plans to have a reputable HD tech check it out and what dealership it is. They may want to involve their adjuster at the same time to also visit with the tech and look at the damage. Try to keep them involved in everything you do with the bike now, since you are going to turn in a claim for damages if there are damages determined. If valdalism, they may want you to contact the sheriff and have him file out a police report on location you last parked, time of day, etc.

Good Luck! but remember, your incident is why we all carry insurance, and now you may need to use it.

I hate to hear that! Never had it happen, but I have blown out the dipstick on my softail, and it's not only messy, but HOT as heck! As far as the filter goes, I always put a ring of oil on the gasket and tighten by hand, then I put the socket wrench on and give it 3/4 turn. Never had a problem. I'd drain it completely now, so that you know exactly how much to put in, and it's all good and clean.

Remember the Slick50 commercials when that stuff first came out? They drove cars 50 miles with zero oil in the engine. A mile on a bike with a bit of Mobil1 in it aint sh*t to worry about.

I agree with some of them drain it and then fill it up with a new filter and then listen to it, if you hear more noise take it to a dealer and have there tech with your insurance guy look it over to see how bad.....i think it will be fine but you will know within the first few min....

Well all that repiled had a look at dipstick....no the bike guys...anyway still had a little on the stick and about 1 qt in lower end will drain today to see if any shavings in whats left in there ,hope I dodged the bullit ....will probably flush it then refill.As far as I can tell just vibrated loose same fliter and oil for 2600 miles never seen it happen before.Went back and measured where il started 5700 feet found oil filter at 2100 feet.We will see.

WOW! That's a horrifying experience. I'd refill it and ride - see what happens. You'll know pretty quickly if it's damaged. If it truly was only one mile of riding with no oil you may be OK, but no way to know for sure. You'll hear funny noises if it's suffered damage. A compression check may tell you alot too.

The insurance claim is a good idea. Sounds like a prankster may have tampered with your oil filter if after 2600 miles it lets to for no reason at all. If no damage you can withdraw the claim, but make that call sooner than later just in case.
