Zumo would be my choice. I bought a Nuvi 780 now I regret my decision.

If I buy...should I consider the "Extended Warranty"?

I'm not an extended warranty kind of guy, but I'd consider it on electronics.
BadPiggy, this is just my opinion, so take it for what its worth. i've had my Zumo 550 for 3 years (or so) now, and i am very pleased with it. Like any electronic device that you strap to a vibrating machine, there is potential for malfunction. I did have to return my Zumo to Garmin, and they promptly replaced it without question.

As far as price goes...$735 is not "bad" but you can do better. Alot of people have been waiting for the zumo price to fall now that the 660 is out. I am not sure they are going to come down greatly, since they are not really the same device.

when it comes to which is better the Zumo or the Nuvi, that all depends what you are expecting. I like the Zumo because i can use it as a gps, mp3 player, XM radio receiver, without having to have multiple devices to accomplish this. The Zumo also came with both the car cradle and the motorcycle mount, which the Nuvi 550 does not. The lower price of the Nuvi is certainly attractive though!!!

Alot of my SNOWMOBILING buddies use the Nuvi-500 and have NO problems with it.
The new versions are waterproof and as for being shock or vibration proof there is
NOTHING that shakes & vibrates than a snowmobile.

As for price ... they can be had for $300 delivered (Amazon) with both maps (topo & street)
Rob ....

Both units are waterproof and both are solid state construction so vibration isn't a problem.

The three primary differences that make the Zumo better suited for bikes are:

#1 The Nuvi does not have an audio output jack so you can't patch it into the bike radio or use ear budds. There's no doubt that the little speakers in the Nuvi would be useless with the engine and wind noise.

#2 The Nuvi does not have an MP3 player.

#3 The Nuvi is not Bluetooth capable.

Yes ... BUT ...

Using Amazon as a price comparison & the original asking models in question ...

Zumo 550 = $653.75 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping
Nuvi 500 = $268.19 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping

OK ... so that is a $385.56 difference ....
I'd rather use the extra $$$$ to buy an AMP and better speakers for the bike ;-)
I guess it all boils down to WHAT you need from a GPS unit.
I got my Wife her OWN bikes so I don't have to have someone to tell me where to go .... LOL ...

I just bought the Nuvi 550. The 299 pricetag was much more reasonable to me than the 700 or so for the Zumo. The Nuvi is waterproof and vibration proof. What it lacks is all of the audio output, bluetooth, satellite radio, etc, which I don't intend to use anyway.

I have the Zumo 550 and really like it for both the bike and the truck....

best place to go is the Garmin web site, you can do a comparison, side by side of features.....

The Zumo was designed for motorcycles.....as is the 660....difference being the XM radio on the 550....

AMA gives a discount for Garmin units and fights for your MC rights....just a thought.

I would go with the Zumo 550....or the 660.....made for motorcycle environment....just my.02
