I always have it in neutral when starting and give it some time to warm up.

My 2008 dyna super glide will not start in gear even if the clutch is pulled in. It will only start in neutral whether the clutch is in or out. If thats a problem, I wonder if its an electrical issue, my neutral light doesnt go on when the bike is in neutral either.

I hope Harley doesn't install all the safety switches crap like other manufacturer. We got to have some excitement in our lives occasionally .

sounds like you've got a bad clutch interlock switch. UNLESS, the dynas are different from the touring line and do not have this 'feature'. look in your owners manual, it should tell you.

if it is the same as the touring line, did you have new levers installed? new grips? the levers have a 'tang' like on the brake side to depress the switch. no tang, switch no workee. if new grips, could be a pinched wire, or broken switch. if you didn't do the install, but the dealer did, take it back to them and have them fix it.

How about a kickstand up safety switch to start?

I'll never forget when I bought my first Harley... the salesman was going over the bike with me and was showing me the starting procedure and he said that the starter would turn even if it was in gear and the clutch was not engaged… and then looked at me with a very straight face and said – “you’ll do that once”. Of course, he was right…

My 07 Street Glide will only start in neutral. I read a post awhile back that said it's because it has something to do with using older levers, pre 06, on the newer bikes. I've got custom levers that I've had since 04 that I keep using when I upgrade bikes.

that would be it. the 07 and newer levers have a 'tang' on the clutch much like the brake lever to depress the clutch interlock safety switch. use old levers, and you bypass the switch.

Several years ago my Wife cranked the engine on her Dyna while in gear, clutch engaged, and the bike went down. Remarkably, she then picked it up by herself. I would add she is 5'9", 127 Lbs but VERY determined.

That can't happen with the current bike.
