Default Changing Brakes Pads - Question

For those of you that have changed the brake pads on your 2008 or 2009 touring bikes, did you replace your brake pad pins with new ones? The service manual says to use new pins when replacing the pads, but it also says to do a lot of unnecessary things (like removing the front master cylinder and draining the brake fluid to change the front brake lever ). Anyway, I'm wondering if replacing the pins is really necessary.

Thanks!

Troop..

Did them on my '07. Never pulled the calipers. Pulled the pins, pulled pads, put outer pads in with slim putty knife to hold back pistons, slipped in pins all the way to line up outer pads then pulled pins back to 1/2 way, squeezed brake to lock outers in place, installed inner pads with putty knife to hold back inner pistions, pushed pins all the way in, done.

Thanks for the info, ezlife. I see that you didn't replace your pad pins and I didn't either when I replaced the pads on my '07 Fat Boy. I wonder now if the '07 service manual says to replace the pad pins?

If you buy HD pads 41854-08 they come with the pins 42849-08. If you use Lyndalls or something then you would have to reuse or buy them for $7.60

Thanks for the replies, guys.

dawg: I know the front pad pin kit part # is 42848-08 and their retail price is $7.60 per kit. Do you know the part # for the rear pad pin kit? I know its retail price is $6.00, but I lost the part number. Thanks!
