I've got a better question: You're standing in a room with a window. The window has a full southern exposure. After a few minutes a bear walks past the window. What color was the bear?

If it's a newer bike, you'll know if your in fifth by the whine.

To me theres a lot more goes into it than head wind . I also think about what kind of road Imn on and when Imn gonig to slow down or hit a curve I try to keep my RPMs above 2500 in twisties somtimes 3000 . but if Imn just cruiseing down the open road I stay about 2500 most the time or just above 2000. Usualy 4th gear takes me all the way to 55 or 60 never hit 6th till over 65.

It's funny though, my mileage is exactly the same doing 55mph @ 2300rpm's or 65mph @ 2300rpm's. You'd thing that with the added wind resistance @ 65mph, even with the same rpm's, that I'd get better mileage in 5th gear.
When you lug yer engine, which is usually tryin to operate it under 2000 rpms what you git is piston tilt. Ain't too good on the pistons. Should see a set.
If yer bike ain't got a tach on it you should git one put on.
