Trick for easy reinstall of riders backrest
#11
Is there a trick to reinstall the stationary back rest on an 08 ultra? The dealer had a time doing it when i got bike and messed up spring on bottom and had to replace.I had seat off to install RJoriginals and thought I had it in but it pulled out and the spring got streached out.Went to hardware store and picked up a few springs but was wondering if I am missing something when I try to install it into the bracket. Thanks for all you help.

Miller Ted sounds good to me
That sounds like a great idea better than replacing the spring all the time. Thanks for the tip I will try that this weekend when I get to try again to reinstall my backrest what a PITA.I have a 78 Goldwing with a backrest that is alot better to work with than my ultra LOL.

I had the same problem until I read a tip somewhere on this forum. Kinda went like this...
Stand on the right side of the bike, put a sock over your hand to assist you hand sliding in the hole, press on the right side leg of the back rest rod and presto, it comes right out! To install, put the left leg in the hole and press the right leg to the left, presto piece of cake. This works well in the top hole of the bracket, if you want it in one of the lower holes you have to squeeze the legs together and apply downward force. I don't use the sock anymore, however sometimes it is simple and others it requires more patience.
Once upon a time I was watching a salesperson showing a potential backrest buyer how easy it was to do on a used bike and he got really frustrated because he was having a helluva time showing how easy it was...I asked if I could try and it went right in, His comment was, "Damn." The buyers comment was, "Do you have one in stock."

It seems that it just takes some practice. I had problems at first but now it seems easier. I do stand on the right side when removing as posted above and it seems to come out easier. I also press the legs together and push them as far down into the mount as possible, then release and rock the backrest to be sure both sides catch. It was a real pain at first but seems to work much better now. The backrest is a MUST for me now.
