I've ruled out the "chopped" pack because I definitely want to put a full face helmet inside it.

As for adding the light bar, I'm sure you need to do more then drill holes as the ends where the bulbs go has a large pod that recesses into the corners of the pack and that requires cutting the pack.

DAWG is already looking into the harness for me. I am resigned to using a wing type ultra pad on top and to cover the speaker holes I may jusy spend $200 and get empty speaker pods from eglidegoodies.com because I dont want bare holes or black plugged holes either.

All this money and I cant even get a permanent fixed mount for it (HD doesnt make it unless I use the ultra one which has a license plate bracket welded to the underside) Sure, use that? Then I'd have to change my taillight assembly out too in order to illuminate the plate because the existing plate is under the light, not above it.

HD sure don't make this easy and here I am trying to spend money in their direction...

Were it me, I'd order the plain box (no speaker or light holes). The light kits come with damned good templates for drilling and cutting any holes you might need. If you have average skills, and access to good, sharp tools, you should have no problems doing the mods yourself. Just be sure to follow the destructions to the letter, use enough masking tape to protect the finish, and, for God's sake, TAKE YOUR TIME!

Good luck with whatever route you choose!

(And we wanna see some photos when you're done!)

Thanks Cal,
I think I have decided on an Ultra Tour Pack w/ lights (and holes) the winged Ultra pad and empty speaker pods on it to fill the void and cover the holes. I'm going to also add the painted LED spoiler and smallest top rack, plus the guard rails around the rear lights too. I just wish it didnt have to be detachable but knowing "Murphys law", right after I buy it and mount it, Harley will finally release a new fixed bracket for the Road Glide model.

I just want to get it on there before the multi day trips begin this year. (Man I can't wait!)

Concerning the '09 detachable tour pak hardware, I ordered part#54205-09 page 389 & part #53276-09 page 392. If you'll look at the bottom of page 389 (for clarity) docking hardware cover kit, you'll notice there's a spacer on the forward stud offsetting the forward docking thimble. Well guess what, the tour pak rack isn't offset. You can still use the mount by putting the spacer to the outside, but then those pretty ($40) chrome docking covers don't cover the front thimbles. Still waiting on Chicago H-D to call back with the answer.

Good info, as long as you got it to work. I dont care about the chromed covers as I will likely keep the tour pack on most of the time anyway. I'll pay attention to the rack and offset before I mount everything up. Is it possible the rack just needed to be spread a little? I've noticed that with some of the sissy bars for the docks too.

No, there's no way to spread the rack. If you're going to leave the tour pak on all the time it really doesn't look bad with the spacer moved to the outside.
