Default Fuel Gauge on RK Classic

How accurate is the fuel gauge on your RK Classic on my '99 the needle will be in the red and when I fill it up it will only take 2.5-2.9 gal. if I'm not mistaken they hold about 5.2 gal.

Mine is pretty accurate but I never really use it. I go off how many miles I've ridden. When I get to 160 miles or so I start looking for gas.

Yep. Mine is equally inaccurate except it stays on full for about 100 miles and then drops like a rock. Trust the trip meter, not the gauge.

+1 on the trip odometer. Too many years riding metrics without a fuel guage has me trained to go by the trip.

ditto here. wife's bike doesn't have a guage. don't know how accurate mine is. I go by the trip odo. do the same thing on all my vehicles...when truck gets to 500 miles, start looking to fill up (ouch)

What the others have said. I don't think it makes a rat's *** what model it is, they are all pretty iffy. On my RKC, it satys on full until 70 miles, then drops slowly till 1/2 (around 150 miles). From there it drops like a rock in the next 30 miles to E.

My wife just bought an '07 Deluxe and her first trip with it, the low fuel light came on at 105 miles. She filled it up at 120 miles and it barely took 3 gallons.

Just watch your trip meter and you will be fine.

While I always go by the trip meter too, I found my 03 Road King to be accurate and my 05 Softail to be accurate as well. The softails fuel light would come on with about a gallon left, i'm not sure if I ever had the fuel light come on with the Road King, I had it less than a year.

The gauge on my '99 RKC behaves exactly as steelhead described. Same as everyone else, I use the trip meter mostly.

Problem with that is, if I ride with mates and someone up the front sets their cruise control and keeps to the speed limit I always seem to get a lot better mileage than when I'm on the back roads on my own havin' some fun! I find that this is when it's good to know how your fuel gauge works!
