It came with the advanced radio with a nav button. when I push the button it reads see
dealer. does anybody know what is needed to turn on the navigation.and do I need to have the dealer perform this function.
also if dealer needs to perform this how long does it take

GPS is an accessorie and is extra on that model (and every model except the Screamin Eagle Ultra Classic....stock on that model).....about $450 extra. You might want to consider a Zumo......probably find it a littel cheaper and with more features.
I know of several that went with the HD GPS then later bought an aftermarket (Garmin) GPS/Satellite radio/MP3/satellite traffic and weather.
I put a Garmin 2730 Street Pilot on Terrie's new bike, 09, rather than the HD accessorie. It has XM/GPS/satellite weather and traffic and I got it on the net for $270.
