Pretty sure the whole thing is different. I think the old ones were made by radiosound and the new ones are hk. I seem to remember reading about a kit to let you use the newer radios with the older bikes but I am not positive. I am currently using a biketronics aftermarket setup and am very happy with it. There is always the aftermarkets u could try

you need a complete inner fairing harness. but the h/k radios are such crap why not use the 96 to 2005 radiosound unit/ 10 times better than an hk and plug and play

You could upgrade to the '03-'05 CD version, but not the HK.

The HK headunit will not work on pre-'06 bikes. The '03-'05 HD OEM units made by Radio Sound will work but won't play anything other than standard CD's; no MP3, etc.

Many here use biketronics.com module and Sony headunits (myself included) that allows you to retain handlebar controls of the headunit
and, depending on the Sony headunit, have thumbdrives, Ipod control, etc.
