Default Do I need an oil cooler

I have an '09 Roadglide with the Stage II 103, SE255 cams and 1.75 Rush Slip ons. The engine was running at 240F at 70mph+ interstate speeds while I was breaking in the new rings. It is at he dealer for the 1000 service and a dyno tune. I am changing to Mobil 1 V Twin oil.

I am going to test ride the bike this week at interstate speeds and would like input on what temperature is acceptable without the addition of an oil cooler.

My inclination is 220F is OK without the oil filter. I base this on my Corvette C6 which runs an oil temp of 223F at interstate speeds.

Thanks

I think all TC engines should have an oil cooler. The oil temp depends greatly on the air temp, and if you've been running 240° in cool air temps I would say it is going to be unacceptably higher in summer. Equipped with the HD Premium cooler my highway temps run about 185° or lower when air temps are no more than 70° and 205-210° in 90°+ air. The highest I've seen (three times) is 230° in heavy summer traffic. I am happy with these numbers if they don't go any higher.

What was the air temp when your bike showed 240° oil temp? Break-in will likely decrease these numbers, but for my taste 240° on the highway is about 30-40° too high. I would say you are a good candidate for an oil cooler.

I agree with iClick. TC96 motors, IMO, seem to utilize an oil cooler as a benefit. I had the HD Premium Oil Cooler on my '07, and temps ran 195F - 210F, with an occasional 220F (Sturgis '07 driving down Lazelle, en route to The Knuckle for lunch).

My new bike will have one as well, and I am doing a 103 Stage III.

I agree, I've had a oil cooler on every Harley I've owned.
It's cheap insurance.

+100 to what guys above have pointed out: lower/cooler operatings temps for the engine is always a good thing!

Count me in as another believer in the cooler. Lower is always better.

I guess that answers the question on my 09 Ultra! I am calling the dealer for a cooler install!

I use the Harley Premium, I also think it's cheap insurance.
