+1 on the enclosed trailer if possible. Its safer and the bikes aren't exposed. As far as cover goes - got the same advice on my boat as others are giving on their bikes here. The covers blow in the wind and bump and rub against your bike the whole trip causing its own share of damage. If you do decide to cover, try and support the cover and keep it off the bike (tent style).

OK HERE GOES< My brother is in the BOAT business, HE trailers high end boats, AND HIS BELoved BIKE< he uses SHRINK WRAP< a plastic used to cover boats in the winter, becomes STiff, he claims it hasn't marked his bike in 1000s of miles of being trailered. This isn't 1st hand advice, Just passing on a Possible way,

Agree with dont! But an idea to look into might be the tank and fender covers used by mechanics, they have a soft lining and will protect from rocks (or wrenches) if you bungee or shrink wrap them on. That way they wont be moving around and rubbing with the movements of the bike, which is like sandpaper.
