Question Oil Temperature Guage

I know that there have been lots of posts about Harley oil temperature guages substituted for the ambient air temperature guage. I own a 2007 Ultra Classic with chrome trim rings around all the guages. According to the Harley parts catalog the oil temperature will not work with the chrome trim rings. I have asked two Harley dealership service managers why and they didn't have a clue. I want to replace my air temp guage with the oil temp guage but don't want to have chrome rings on all guages except the oil temp. Has anyone run into this before and can the chrome trim ring be made to work and look right? I know I can't be the first person to encounter this. I would really appreciate your input and experiences in this area.

Thanks in advance and ride safe.

I have heard that the chrome trim rings won't work on the McEwen gauge but I thought they fit the HD gauge just fine.

It's identical in size to the air temp gauge your removing.......Don't see why it wouldn't work....

I installed the HD oil temp gauge & was not able to fit the chrome ring over the bezel. It was as if the bezel was just a bit bigger or thicker. Maybe I had a one off but luckily this was the first one I tried before opening and installing the others. For one I did the right thing the "first" time around.

The chrome ring worked just fine on the McEwen gauge in my 04 . I'm really glad that I went to this temp gauge, it gave me something else to spend $$$$$ on, look at, and worry about. I haven't made the same mistake on my 06, YET!!

I've installed the trim rings on 3 different oil gauges, one a McEwan and two HD oil temp gauges. The ring is a looser fit on the HD gauges so instead of using the sticky thin double sided tape they provide with the ring, cut some pieces of double sided thin foam tape, it will work fine.
