Default Fuel/mileage countdown thingy..

Went for a ride today never really knowing how many miles to expect to get out of a tank. Went 100 miles out on a desert highway without seeing a single gas station, figured I had better turn around to be safe. I had a little more than a half tank when I turned around so I figured I have enough to get back. Heading back I was now against the wind and could practically watch the gauge drop down. Then on comes the countdown, knowing I had at least 40 miles to the next station. I was freaking out pretty bad, the countdown was going very quick, went from 30 to 27 in a little over a mile, can't figure that out. Anyway, got down to one mile remaining and there was a border patrol station, stopped and called a bud to bring me gas. I had 15 miles to the next station and was not sure how accurate the countdown was so I played it safe. Does anybody know if that thing is very accurate?

Not sure how accurate this is. I have ran "miles left" down to looks like "re" (reserve). I have never put 6 gallons of gas in tank. I think the most I have ever put in was 5.4 gallons.
So I just use as a guideline.

Mine only shows remaining miles when there are double digits. r 12 to r 11 to Lo,
at low I've usually burned 5.25 gals and have .75 left.

This is about what mine does too. Mine turned to LO and took 5.1 gallons.

Why don't you ride it around close to home when you get to low then have a friend follow with some gas and go until it stops. Then you will know!

heheh

Did NOT run out of gas, but I did put in 6.145 gallons without overfilling her. BIG SURPRISE FOR ME!!

It is my understanding that all you need to do it drop in some fuel and let the fuel pump do it's job. Might take a couple of extra spins on the motor, but shouldn't be a big deal if you do run out.

Good suggestion as it doesn't matter as much as how much it takes to fill it up but how much you can get out of it!

Mine is very close, I ran mine all the way down and squezed 5.9 gallons in 08 flht. It will vary depending on how you are driving. I've had mine go up on the miles left when I slowed down. It calculates how you are driving at the time.

I have experienced pretty much this exact thing.

I know that when my idiot light comes on and I look at the (miles left gage) I have 1.5 gallons of gas in the tank, but then you take head wind and other factors into the pic it is a hit and miss type of deal.
