Default Harley Advanced Audio GPS

I have a question my '08 Electra Glide Classic that has the basic Advanced Audio Harmon Kardon radio. I have no GPS, CB or XM presently. I have recently been given an antenna and hook up for GPS in the radio.

I know there are many other GPS options out there MUCH better. HOWEVER what is needed to turn my existing radio into OR just turn on the GPS capability? Is it just a software disc that you put into the radio and download? If so is there just a website you go to to get this or is it a Harley only $$$$$ item?

I'm just looking to capitalize on what I was given. A couple friends have purchased inexpensive Garmons, Tom Toms and a few others. They have all had failures due to vibration or just normal bike abuse. I would assume they will only get warrantied a few times.

I can't afford the $600+ made for bike units at this time.

Thanks.

I have seen that in the catalog, but is it a software or hardware upgrade?
Does the option have an external GPS module, or is it just the antenna?
Is the stereo GPS capable and only needs the software activated?

Anyone know for sure?

I don't have an HK headunit, but given the apparently frequent problems with them I would be reluctant to invest in a GPS add-on to the HK headunit because if the headunit goes after the warranty expires, you will be replacing the HK with a new ($1,000) one or buying one that's a take-off ($500+).

It's both....there is a module with a separate antenna inside the fairing. You also have to keep the disc in the player unless the GPS already has the area info. I found it easier to just to keep the disc in at all times.

I have had the add-on HD HK GPS for quite a while and it works fine for me. It has some limitations but once you recgonize them the unit works quite well. It lacks a lot of the bells and whistles of the stand alone units (I have a garmin 750 for my truck). Like you said no vibration problems etc. No wires running everywhere and when you stop you don't have to worry about someone stealing the unit. Also I have never had a HK unit fail nor any of my riding buddies nor anyone I have ever talked to with a HK radio.
