The best thing you can do is educate your passenger not to drag their boot across them. A buddy has his wife put a nasty scratch on the top of one of his hard bags on a street glide.

I have riden over 5000 miles now and and not mark, chip or scratch.

38K on my 2006, and now 16k on my 08, with no scratches, chips, or any otehr blemish. Its all about teaching the passenger HOW to mount the bike and Dismount.

+2 for the Lid Covers or Lid Haulers from RideTek. Look much better than the HD ones.

I would think over time, these covers would do more damage than good?

i thought pro finish went out of business he was a rip off anyways thats another story
i also have the lid bras from hd work and look great-ride safe
