Stock units work well..only thing I found that wasn't to my liking..to have a clean setup without having all the garb attached all over the place, you had to buy the HD items...such as XM or an amp.....and those ARE expensive!

My buddys radio went out on his scoot. He insisted on keeping his CB feature so from what I understand, he had to replace it with stock. I sold him my stock stereo for enough money to buy my head unit and retro radio kit.

About the only thing I think I might change now is to a newer deck that has iPod capability. I'm sick of burning mp3 CD's all the time -usually for 2-3 songs!- when I can just upload a new song to the iPod and it's ready to go. The fairing controls are definately worth getting the kit to use them!
I was hoarding parts for my build for over a year. I actually bought my amp 2 years ago, even though it hasn't been used 1 year, yet.

If I recall, it was around $310 plus tax.

The amp blew once. Yes, a pain in the butt to remove and send in.
HOWEVER, Biketronics warranties their products for LIFE.
I sent the amp in...got a new amp returned.
NO questions asked!
I paid shipping to them.

I went with the Biketronics Sony head unit. For 20 bucks extra I got the USB hub that allows me to play MP3s from a jump drive. No need for Cds or ipod. It doesn't get any easier than this

Biketronics 150w 2 channel amp
Dakota Digital antenna

Of course the head unit is where it goes...XM box is stacked on top of head unit...IPOD cable is run under tank, down backbone, into saddlebag (removed wire tray lid and lined it in there)...speakers are where they should be, the crossovers are on bottom of head unit...retro kit & amp is stacked on top of XM box...XM antenna is mounted on fairing...Dakota antenna is inside fairing

pic shows a Sony, I didn't care for it, removed & returned for a Pioneer
Alpine head units? You know which ones?

I don't recall.
It's the units that have the hole in the back for the single wire.
I forget what that wire would be called.

Anyway, that's how the Biketronics radio kit works, through the wire that you plug into that hole.

The hole looks like a hole that you'd plug an earphone in.

Yes, there are a few Alpine units with this feature.

HAD TO GOOGLE...that "hole" is called Optional Wired Rotary Remote (RM-X4S)...any head unit that has this, will work with the Biketronics kit

It has to be "steering wheel remote ready"

Yeah, for a wired remote. I don't think any of the newer Alpines have that. I might check out the Pioneers even though I'm a diehard Alpine fan.

Thats what its for.
The plug hole has a V shape to it.
This is how the Biketronics kit works..it acts as a steering wheel remote.
