I carry a .444 winchester 1894 that gets the deer on impact! LOL I haven't seen these things work either

Didn't MCN have an article about deer avoidance systems at one time? Seems like they said nothing works. Although if you're fast enough, the .444 might be effective... as long as you can hit it before it enters the road.... Hitting a dead deer probably isn't a lot better than a live one...

 

I was up in mid-Wisconsin (Townsend) three summers ago cruzin the back woods (highway T) on my 1550cc metric at 55 mph (the speed limit).

Just a beautiful gorgeous bright sunny early Sunday afternoon - no people - no cages - just me and nature - picture perfect. Heaven. You know the feeling.


Out of nowhere, a 12 point BIG A$$ freakin buck comes flying across the road jumping out of a culvert right across my path. It looked more like a moose.

I had literally no time to react - too close - too quick - hands never made it to the clutch or brake - no time to even swerve - no time for my life to flash in front of me.


Missed him at 55 mph by 1 centimeter - UFB - had to pull over afterwards and puke. It was that scary. My lucky day. Closest to lights out in 50 years.

Swore I'd never ride again - bike was sold within a week.


Got the itch again a couple years later - this time got a Harley. Don't mind it attracting the two legged deer, but I too am looking for any real ideas/solutions to avoid the four legged ones.

Maybe just the Harley sound will keep 'em away?

 

Is that what they call a 44X40? I had my grandfathers Winchester model 1892 rifle, which I gave to my nephew that used that pistol round (looks like a .44 mag). That heavy POS could break your arm if you had to un-holster the POS. Not much re-coil. Felt like you were shooting a .22.
