Default Shift Linkage broke today going to work

Another beautiful riding day in Florida, but off to work I go so I can play later. Anyhow on the last mile in the shift linkage comes apart up front, stuck in first gear. Thought I could reach down and move the shifter but that was not too smart. So on my lunch break had the misses come by and take be to dealer for a new linkage. Passed on the stock one as I expect it would do the same thing. Purchased the high dollar HD chrome heim end linkage. The on and off was a breeze, 15 minutes to swap out. This one better last longer, though I can't complain too much I did get 25k miles out of the stock one.

My stock linkage broke last week in the "driveway". All I needed was the front knuckle joint, but had to buy the whole link. Have the nice Harley Road King chrome linkage on my list of stuff to get, but with the economy as cruddy as it is, I wound up spending 25.00 for stock vs. 150.00 for chrome. Delayed gratification.

You'd think as often as this poor design breaks, heim joint would be standard. 1st thing I changed on the scoot. Those that haven'y yet keep some wire tires in your bags.

The high dollar HD chrome heim end linkage is peace of mind. Good move.

25K and you feel good that the linkage lasted that long? Are they that bad? I haven't heard about this problem before. My last bike (Dyna)I kept for 90K and no probs. I've got 18K on my FLHT, should I be worried?

It's one of the first things I change. Not because I'm afraid it'll break but because it looks like crap!

Honestbob, I would be very concerned about yours. I did some reseach on this condition and most quoted 15 - 20k miles when the ball comes out of the socket. One interesting entry called the Harley a piggy bank for the MOCO. They always keep you coming back for more stuff.
