i usually fuel up at 200 miles and have 1 gal. left in tank. it also depends if i am riding highways or back roads then i will fuel up between 150 and 200 miles don't want to run out in the middle of no where.i relie more on mileage then the gas guage. my bike avg. is 42.8 mpg with a 6 gallon tank

I always err on the side of caution. If I feel like a break anyway it might as well be at a gas station. Around Wyoming and Montana you can find lots of areas where the next station is 70+ miles away, then if you happen to hit a head wind your mileage can go way down. I've never seen my low fuel light come on....always figured it wasn't worth pushing it that far.

On my '07 SG gauge, 1/2-tank (needle vertical) will fill with 3.2 gal. Since the tank holds about 5.4 gal. (HD says 5.0) I know I have 2.2 gal. remaining. Well, that's not exactly half-a-tank by my math. When it shows about 1/4-tank or slightly less the low-fuel light comes on that means you have about one gallon remaining, maybe a tad more. When you get towards empty you're playing gas-tank roulette, as I find the gauge unreliable at that point and I try to fill-up long before that. I've had it sputter showing above empty yet on other occasions run smoothly down to the lowest graduation on the gauge. I know what gas mileage my bike gets in varied circumstances and figure the remaining miles based on that more than looking at the gauge alone.

Another observation is that I have no idea by what measure they use for graduations on the gauge, as it seems unlinear and doesn't follow any logical course that I can ascertain.

>>If I'm on a trip I carry 2 extra quarts of premium just in case I feel like pushing the envelope. I use camp fuel canisters purchased a REI. It's also nice to be able to help out a friend in need<<

I think its a tie between When do you get gas and How do you mount your bike.

When my "A" odometer reads 125 miles, I will stop and fill up. Better to take a break and make sure you have a full tank.

My fuel gauge really moves slow until I reach about 120 miles (1/2 full). Then, the meter drops pretty quick.

When runing in the Eastern 1/2 of the U.S., I fill up every time I stop at a gas station, which is usually every 1 1/2 hours or so. When running in the Western 1/2 of the U.S., I always carry a 1 gallon gas can full of 93 gasoline, just in case the gas station is not where it is supposed to be. I have had to use it a few times before!
