They all whine.

Have an 08 UCSE3, bad whine at 2500-3500 in 5th gear. I have been using 6th gear on the open road down to about 2100 RPM with no problems, eliminates the whine.

Ok I'll bite at this. I guess I'm not the smart one. All Harley's: Whine, Smell like gas, Clunk, Run lean, Have hard seats, Run hot. Add what you want to this list. It may be the time of day and the end of the weekend, back to work tomorrow and the weather sucks. Sorry for the rant, but it is a Harley. If anything whines more than my bike, it will be me. I can't spend enough time on it or spend enough money on it. I LOVE IT! God Bless America. Have a safe and happy holiday season all and ride safe.

The reason for straight cut 5th is because it is stronger that a helical cut of the same size, metalurgy, etc. HD figures you'll drop down a gear when passing, so they make 5th stronger. On non-highway roads, 6th is too tall, so you'll use 5th. Loaded 2 up with a full tourpack and 5th is used a lot more on the highway. Bottom line is that 5th is the backbone gear.

Is this your opinion or fact...it makes sense. I just want to know if HD said this.

It is fact that straight cut gears will be stronger than helical gears of similar composition, metalurgy, etc. The rest is pretty much common knowledge and experience. I don't work for HD, but I assume this is why 5th is straight cut...there's no manufacturing reason that it could not be helical cut and the cost difference would be pennies.

Redline w/shockproof pretty much stopped my whine.
