I don't see it as a deal. The same results can be had for:

130 bucks for a piston kit, 300 bucks for cams, 100 bucks or so for boring, 100 bucks for gaskets and bearings and and a thing or two else I might have forgetten......Of course, a dealer gets the parts cheaper.....So by my math, he is making at least 1000 bucks on labor.....way high, IMO.

You left a few thigs out and some of your prices were a little off. You might find those prices on unknown pieces from sellers that may not back up their merchandise and can give very little tech support as they are working an internet business out of their basement with no or very little invenyory on E-Bay etc. but beware:

Wiseco pistons $410, Andrews/crane cams $300, Pushrods, S&S Twin Cam $200, Cam change kit gaskets $19, Top end gasket set $96Bore/fit/final hone two cylinders $125, Inner bearings $20, Outer Bearings $25. These are retail so you might get slightly better prices depending on the shop, they add up to almost $1,200. Now add in R.R cylinders, cam, lifters, pushrods,dis-assembly/assembly of cams/camplate and cleaning of areas affected and reassambly and the shop is making less than $500. We do not use the rings that come with the pistons, we only use Total Seal as we have to warranty the engine for a reasonable time, so that adds to our cost. Add to that the cost of doing busuness: buying tools, insurance, heat/lights, taxes, chemicals, Even at $2,000 we aren't getting rich. Also that does not even cover basic headwork. We have about an even number of customers that do work and have problems that don't. If you are experienced and have access then do it, if not find a REPUTABLE SHOP and have them do it. Ask to speak to several customers that have had similar work done, basically check out the shop, remember it is your money. We will loan out some of our tools to our good customers on the weekends to do work on their bikes, maybe there are shops in your area that do the same. Hope this helps.

The dealer ain't gonna use 410 buck Wiseco pistons.....He'll use 100 buck(his cost) SE Flat Tops. Pushrods? He'll stick the stock ones back in. Cams? He'll use SE's that will cost him under 200 bucks. A plain Jane dealer HD 95" package ain't gonna have 1200 bucks worth of parts in it.

One of the Sales Guys at Bridgeport HD in CT said they are having a special on the 95 upgrade for $900. I'm not interested, so didn't ask for details.

Did mine last June.....1550 kit, race tuner, gear drives and Andrews cams and it ran me $2500 (parts, labor, tax, title, kiss, everything)..........for me, was the best $ I've spent on it thus far.....wish I had it done long time ago. I just wanted more low and mid range torque as I spend a lot of time in the mountains and it saves me a lot of shifting. Now it runs like it should have out of the box.....IMHO.

Why would anyone use SE parts when you can get more HP and torque out of aftermarket stuff?? The guys that do that are the ones that get sucked into the long-term service contracts. Once you have it open you might just as well use the best parts and blow those dealer built bikes in the weeds. Like my buddy say's at his tattoo shop when somebody asks him what's the cheapest tattoo you got? He replies "I got one that says "CHEAP BASTARD" for free!! I just don't see why anybody would cut corners on an $16,000-$30,000 motorcycle. When you use less than optimal parts you can actuall lose performance. Just my two cents worth.
