my understanding is.... Dept bikes can be sould sans the emer lights and Siren...Dealers get stuck with them from time to time due to locals refitting budgets and so on. Peace officer and Fire Bikes are for active or retired members of said Depts with proof {ID} and verified ?? by HD, Copy of ID goes with paper to HD . You also have to sign a contract with HD that you will not sell for one year... ergo the {discount} money off
and the way the economy is tanking alot of Local townships will be dropping out of the new bike deals

The dealers usually do the normal service on them. So just as good as any other bike brought in.

Check here, Chester's has 2 ex-police bikes listed. Both are 2007's and are in the 14,000 to 15,000 range.

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't the saddlebags different on the police bikes?

I remember something about them opening differently.

990rtracer, I really like the emblem on your tank. Is that a custom paint set or something you had done locally.

They are different. They hinge open on the outsides, and have "hockey puck" ***** to latch and unlatch them. These pics show the hockey pucks and the hinges:

Yes they have the hockey pucks, so its easier for the cop to get into them. The only way to completly rid them is to buy new lids. You can take the puck off and theyll be a hole there and some people put chrome pop up locks in those holes.

We have 100's of police bikes, we have over 200 police depts all over the Northeast we lease to. We got 20 brand new ones in last week......This is why....

Sound HD in Washington St has a fleet of Police fleet returns, first come first served.
They are the no frills RK or Flt models in Police Color scheme , they have heavy duty wiring for the electric gizmos they issue the Men/Women in Blue. Heavy Duty Alternator and ABS as well as the 103 motor. Not sure if they still have the run flats tires installed though.
When I say no frills, they are differant than the civilian ones we all can buy.
Others have provided more info but thought I would add some as well.

If you can get a low mileage bike and are able to determine the service history they are a good deal for a first bike or even a second one as well.
