Default Mild Motor Work

Bear in mind first of all that i'm still stuck on the lowly 88 cu. in. motor since i'm riding an '02 (but hey, its paid for!!!) I am interested in doing a little something to the motor to pep it up some, but dont' want to go crazy (mainly in the hopes to not spend a fortune on this project). Does anyone have any seat of the pants remarks about going from my stock motor (i do have the SE Air cleaner and Rinehart tru-duals with a DFO) to a 95" Big Bore kit and a new cam? Even if i just went with all SE stuff, would i notice a big enough difference to justify the $$$ or do i have to get into a 103" before i really notice? Thanks for the input guys.

Default my 95 incher

I own a 2000 FLHRCI. In 2001, I had it converted to 95 inches. I'm making 97 horses and 94 ft lbs of torque. Even my wrench said it was nice to work on a road king with some get up and go. I went a little over the top - using S&S gear drive, Fueling oil pump and lifters, but it can be done cheaper. I now have 75,000 miles on it. Over time, I noticed if I keep it under 79 MPH I can get up to 44 miles per gallon. If I drive 55, I'll get 50+, but who does that? I tell people it goes 85 all by itself. This spring I'll go with a PC III mainly so the timing can be retarded a bit - in high temps I can pick up some pinging. I also welded in a 41mm freeze plug in the left side exhaust manifold and now run a poor man's 2 into 1, but looks like stock HD SE pipes. K&N air filter. Also fixed the oil in the air cleaner BS by running a drain hose off the breather.

My bike would run right with my buddies 96" 07 with Rineharts and stage 1 program. That was with V&H longshots, now mine has more mid range power with the Rinehart tru-duals. Huge difference between mine and a stock 88". I have seen 44mpg with 2up and gear. Doesn't get more than 40 with just me on it, it's too much fun to be in the throttle.

I was also looking into this, I have a set of 103 SE jugs pistons and cams that I was looking at dropping on an 88ci. If you have to split the case, probably a good idea to pick up a used 96 crank and have the whole assembly balanced. Gear drives are the next project on the list, but goddamn they are expensive, although, not as expensive as lunching the motor. Im happy to hear that 88 to 95 can be felt. Be careful, from what I have seen on my research, going into true duals actually drops your power since you loose out on the scavaging effect, but it runs cooler, and you dont cook your legs as bad with one less pipe back there. 2 into 1 is the best for all out performance gain, but I like my bagger with the duals.

yes....several options for you.....the least expensive pep you can get is a set of chain cams(like the moco's 204 or the kury wild things 1 or 2), a big boys head job, & a tune on your existing 88" platform....if you want more cubes you need a proven kit from any one of the major builders....many are on this forum....i choose steve at GMR .... a gear drive is bout 350, adjustable rods 150'ish, rollers bout the same, & the sky can be the limit....IMO from experience, buy a good kit and you can do nice work and have a much stronger drivetrain for less than 3k....the first scenario of drop-ins, big boyz, & tune bout a grand

Check out the aftermarket packages, you might get alot more bang for your buck. Absolutely nothing wrong with SE parts, though. Going to true duals will not net you a loss in power. It depends on your combination and if you inform your builder of the exhaust you prefer they should be able to put together a great package. Many prefer as much low rpm torque as possible and a 2-1 usually compliments this setup.

I have the SE stage II big bore kit on my 06 RG. It was on the bike when I bought it. I changed out the stock head pipes w/SE slip-ons for true duals w/Rhineharts and had it mapped on the dyno. See sig for specifics.

I have put over 12k miles on it since I bought it and have had no problems. The power level is good even when I ride 2-up loaded, even 2-up loaded pulling my trailer loaded...got 45mpg on the highway at 75mph.

The key for any build is getting the bike tuned correctly.
