I like the 3rd Gen. fattie myself, big enough that I don't drop it and 8 gig's will give you a lot of music and the battery life is great, and some mounts allow you to use the power cord and the patch cord at the same time, for those really long rides.
being able to use power cord and patch cable at same time

I have gilbos mount for my 3rd gen and LOVE IT!!! Thousands of songs on random and the ipod is right at my fingertips on the handlebar.
I have a friend with an older Ipod with the hard drive and he has skipping issues.

I upgraded to the IPod Touch, specifically to get the flash memory so I could use it on the bike. Oh, and also wanted the higher storage capacity. I use the Ram mount, monster cable connection to the stereo and get really good sound quality.
I'm running a Zumo550, put a 4gig sd card in it. Put a bunch of mp3's on it.
All solid state, run the sound output from the zumo to the aux input on the Harley radio.
very satisifed with that setup.
Same here and I love it!!! You kill 2 birds with one stone with the ZUMO 550.
