I like the 3rd Gen. fattie myself, big enough that I don't drop it and 8 gig's will give you a lot of music and the battery life is great, and some mounts allow you to use the power cord and the patch cord at the same time, for those really long rides.

I have gilbos mount for my 3rd gen and LOVE IT!!! Thousands of songs on random and the ipod is right at my fingertips on the handlebar.
I have a friend with an older Ipod with the hard drive and he has skipping issues.

I upgraded to the IPod Touch, specifically to get the flash memory so I could use it on the bike. Oh, and also wanted the higher storage capacity. I use the Ram mount, monster cable connection to the stereo and get really good sound quality.
