I believe it is federal law for HD to install them, not for the end user to keep them working...I can't swear to it, but I think this is correct.
Personally, I'd like to get mine to go off with the high beams (which is how I ride during the day) and on with the low beams (for better conspicutiy at night).
Oh yeah, and I'm 43, so am I an old guy or a young guy?

It is a DOT regulation that they must be operating when driving on any public and or federal highway during hours of darkness. They are called marker lights and just like the lights on trucks and cars they must be operating.

I asked the very same question before and got the same sh*t. Anyways, I understand why you don't want them on. You can do what I did, just take some black tape and place it on one of the tabs on the bulb (should be two) and see if it takes the running lights away. If not, then it's the other one. This way you can always go back to the way it was and it's much simpler.
