Police Bike - is this a good deal

RE: Police Bike - is this a good deal
I bought my 05 flhpi from Greeley Harley Davidson in Colorado for $14,000.00 with 451 miles on it. Most of the police bikes are black or white, or get a custom color scheme for the specific department. My bike must have been a mistake, because the color is Diamond Ice (metallic silver). It was never actually in service chasing bad guys or writing tickets. I added the tank emblems, seat, passenger pegs and changed out the hand switches for lights/turn/horn/start to regular RK chrome housing/buttons. There is no evidence that it is/was a police bike except for the RPM gage that says POLICE. I spent about $1,200.00 ($400 installation included)for that stuff. So Ipaid $15,200.00 fora bike with 451 miles that is equivalent or better than a stock Road King in April 2006.
This is my second police bike. The first one came from an auction held by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's office in Metairie, Louisiana in 2000. I paid $8,900.00 for a 1996 with 23,000 miles on it. It was rode hard and put away wet for 4 years. I went through the bike and with the maintenance check list and made sure everything was lubricated and repaced some worn cables etc. ($500). I shipped the bike to France and rode 6,000 miles over a years time without a mechanical breakdown; except for oil changes, a battery and a set of tires I didn't have to put any money out for repairs. I sold it in 2005 for $7,000 with 33,000 miles on it, and the guy who bought it from me is riding the snot out of it still.
Value is very personal. Why would I spend $15,200 for an 05 in 2006, when I could have bought a zero miles stock Road King for $17,895?I feel like there is more than $2,500 value in the differences between the two bikes.
Thepolice bike has an RPM gage. I really likethe gage, I wouldhave had to buy it for a stock RK.
I LOVE the air ride solo seat of the police bike. It is the best seat. (PERIOD) Many buyers of the stock bike get a Corbin seat and pay ($600?) hundreds. I got a matching passenger seat from Mustang.
The police bike has a heat management system (according to Harley Davidson).
The police bike comes with run flat tires (thicker side walls that will not collapse if you pick up a nail).
I like the hockey puck style saddle bag top to open/close. I got chrome puck covers for $75.
The platform on the rear fender that was intended for a luggage/equipment box is great for carrying a sleeping bag or other oversized stuff that would not fit in the saddle bag.
There is a lot of chrome on the bike! I have not spent a dime for more bling.
I like the black powder coated engine with just enough brite stuff to give it contrast.
I like the taller full windshield.
To sum it up, my Road King Police bike isa customized bike. No one else at the HOG gatherings has one like it. The money I saved, (NOT) trying to make my bike look different with chrome accents, was spent on the screaming eagle stage 1 kit (air cleaner/exhaust/chip upgrade). I flew into Colorado and rode the bike home (1200 miles). Last week I rode to Houston (600 miles) and the ride was easy and fun.
I hope this helps anyone considering a Police bike over a stock bike. My opinion is biased, obviously by my love and experience of owning one. Take your time and shop around. I looked at hundreds of them on Ebay. Find out which dealers are the ones leasing the bikes, and get a schedule of when the bikes comes back from lease. Let the dealer know that you want a cherry. I contacted Ryan at Greeley Harley in November, and waited till March when my cherry ripened.
And finally, a word about Greeley Harley Davidson in Greeley, Colorado! Wow! Nice people, friendly and courteous! I ordered the seat, passenger pegs, tank

RE: Police Bike - is this a good deal
Here is my 2004 FLHPI. It was returned back to the selling dealer Golden Gate HD with only 652 miles put on by the Richmond PD. GGHD put $10k worth of chrome on it including a Burgundy screamin eagle paint tin set, SE pipes. It is a great bike IMO and allowed me to get a really nice Harley with way low miles for only $14,500. I bought it 2 months ago and have added 1500 of my own miles. The owner of GGHD sold the dealership and had to keep his used bikes so he sold about 15 of them including this one on craigslist for cheap.

RE: Police Bike - is this a good deal
I paid $13,900 for a 2003 Road King Police in 04 w/ 6800+miles!! It's a good deal if it doesn't have too many miles on it. Remember you can go to the H-D website and type in the vin # and get all the service records done at an H-D dealer. Services done at the cop garage are another thing tho!![sm=wootwoot.gif]

RE: Police Bike - is this a good deal
Got my 04 FLHPI from Fort Myers HD. It was a parade bike and needed new floorbaords. Changed them and the seat, love the scoot. Not one minutes problems. It was monthly serviced by the dealer and the records are there to prove it.
Sure you can get some rough ones, but if you look them over and see the records, you save a lot!!!!
