Default Question for those running 85-140 gear oil in tranny

Hi all, I just did my first service on my 09 Ultra. I used the Mobil 1 Vtwin in the engine and primary just like in my 07 but I switched the tranny to the synthetic Mobile 85-140. We rode yesterday for the first time since servicing and the tranny is so much better shifting and the 5th gear whine is not nearly as noticeable. My question is that when we would stop I could smell the gear oil quite a bit. I thought I had a leak but the bike is bone dry underneath, has anyone experienced this with their bikes? Thanks.

I have noticed it it on my bro-in laws ultra.
Went the the mobil gear lube on his last service.
I run the amsoil svg,IMO the smell is because it
is also rated LS(limited slip)as long as i've
been around auto's has has had a different smell.
just my opinion
I'm sure the experts will have the correct answer

I run the same thing in my 07 - the shifting is much better and yes I do smell the oil.
Glad you posted cause I was wondering the same thing. My conclusion was the vent hose at the top of the tranny was venting the gas/smell. I thought the 09's had a different setup though?

From what I can find with the search it seems that the smell is from the tranny vent. I guess it's not noticeable with the 50wt engine oil because it doesn't have that much odor to it. We did ride again today and it didn't seem to be as bad, maybe you get used to it.

If you overfill the least bit it will blow out the vent. Make sure it is between the "low and high" mark. Took me forever to get the correct level, now no more smell!

Bike has to be HOT to check it, not just a trip to the store but up to operiating temp (210-230), long hard ride.

Hope this helps.

Steve
