Default Twin Cam Oil Leak?!

O.k., I may have a concerning oil leak on my '04. It appears as a large wet/moist area, but not dripping yet. Underneath the bike, looking up, its wet with oil on the back part of the engine case, running right down to the bottom. And the oil is coming from somewhere higher up, but cannot tell where. The source seems tucked up a bit. From above I cannot see anything.

I think it only seeps when I'm riding it, i.e., under pressure? On my first ride this year, it seemed a bit worse than when I noticed it last summer. Note: I had synthetic oil put in over winter, and maybe thinner oil seeps easier?

My biggeest fear is that its the main engine case gasket, that would require splitting the engine in half for a new gasket.

Anyone hear of this or have any thoughts? Is there an additive available for adding to oil, to help expand/seal loose gaskets? I just charged $2200 bucks for my winter customizing stuff, and really really don't like the thought of having the engine removed and slip apart...big bucks.

Thanks for any thoughts,
Bill

Check the inside of your air cleaner to see if your breather is spitting out too much oil. That is a common problem and causes oil to blow back and run down the back of the motor. If that's it it's an easy fix.

Just think if you have to split the cases you can go with the stroker 103!!!!! As Terry said, check that breather mine pukes oil everytime it gets good and hot. Damn oil goes everywhere. Putting on a oil cooler this weekend. Supposed to help.

Clean it really well, dry it all off and then sprinkle baby powder on the suspected areas. Go for a spin and identify where it is coming from. Then, make the call. If it is leaking from the case halfs and $ are tight, get rid of the syn, run dino and let it leak till you can fix it.
Then it will be just like riding an Evo or Shovel, carry some oil and top it off as needed and don't worry about it.

You may want to check the shift shaft seal as well. Look on the top of the engine from the left side. You'll need a flashlight. Follow the shift shaft from the shifter linkage to the tranny. If you see any oil, that's your problem. Not a big deal, I changed mine last year. Good luck.

I have a oil leak, on my 04 FLHTCUI. It was so bad it actually oiled up the rear brakes. I thought it was coming the primary, I took it all apart, New gaskets, starter shaft seal. Still leaked. I ended up getting some auto dye for oil, and the UV light. I found out it was the oil pan gasket. That dye works great, got the light off Amazon. Auto parts store should have the dye, I did not use much, half the little jar,

Dye and light is interesting. Can tell difference between oils then. Never done it. The orginal post was from 2006. The cases do not have a gasket, just sealant. Pulled mine apart this winter and regooped based on age.
