Default 1000 mile service

Sorry if this is a rerun thread but how many of you did your own 1000 mile service on your bikes instead of taking it to the dealer and if you had any warranty work required after did you get any hassle because of doing the service yourself? I have always taken my new bikes in for the 1st service then did all the rest myself but thinking of doing the 1000 mile myself this time.

I did all of mine so far with no dealer problems the last 1 being my 25,000 mile. I do have a notebook that I keep dates and mileage in with receipts for filters and parts.

Same here, they aren't difficult. Get you a spiral notebook and list the dates of the service and staple the receipts from the oil/filter purchase to it and you will be covered as far as the warranty goes.

You beat me to posting this by about a day---I was wondering the same question! My local dealership charges about $350-$400 for the 1k service. Because of that, I was seriously thinking about buying a $65 manual and doing it myself---couldn't be that hard...

My dealer asked to do the 1000 mile.
They charge $295 for synthetic.
He said it was important for them to do the first check as they check all the specifications: i.e., head play, clutch and drive belt tension.
For $295 I'll have them do it.

I had my 1k done a week ago. We went syn and they charged 299.00 was worth it to me to have them check the bike. I will probably let them do the 5k also and then do it myself after that.

I let the dealer do the first service to establish an early record. Most other services will be done by me time permitting. The 5k service was easy. Takes about 6 beers to finish and 6 more to clean up.

I did the 1000 at the dealer, but I am coming up on my 5000 and am debating whether to do it myself, let an indy do it, or take it to the dealer one more time. The dealer charges $325 for synthetic, the indy will charge $250, and I can do it for a hell lot less, but there are a couple of things I don't think i want to do on the list.

My indy is fine with me doing what I am comfortable with and he does the rest. Very easy to work with and just a great guy. Sure beats the dealer.
