Question Upgrading to an Ultra Classic...Suggestions?

Riders,

I've had the great opportunity to own the 07 RK standard, with some aftermarket mods, i.e. 16" Apes. I'm stationed on Okinawa and I'm selling my RK, it has 6Kmiles on it, well taken care of. Soon (Feb 09) I'll be headed to Germany with the Family, however I hear it's a bit chillier over there than here. So we've chosen to upgrade to the 09' Ultra Classic, pewter pearl and white gold.

To all the Ultra Classic owners: tell me the do's and don'ts, Cons and Pros of owning the Ultra Classic. Also, what's the first thing to Mod, as I know this thing is pretty well loaded.

Is this a good upgrade?

Any input will be helpfull,

Lew

I would skip the the tourpack removal kit and just enjoy riding it in it's true form. I wish I could recover the $$$ I spent for mine because I never take it off. I added Sirius radio to mine and hate whenever I ride without it. Nothing beats riding commercial free. Also, I added the Road Zeppelin seat, I love it. I can ride all day pain free.

Still waiting on my back rest, no real mods though. Like it stock. Oh yea, I did add a cup and Ipod holder though.

Fella's this I must ask....

On my stock bars for my RK, prior to adding the apes...I got pain between my shoulder blades if I rode more than 100miles...is that an issue the the Ultra?

Thanks,

Lew

As great as the Sat Radio's are.. be aware, they do not work in Germany... there's no broadcasting Satellite's overhead.

I'd look on ebay for the Harley MP3 player. I picked mine up for $100.. it mounts on the right handlebar in front of the brake, and plugs into the Aux jack on the radio. I use a 2 gig chip in it.. burned over 400 songs onto it. You could go with an ipod or similar plugged into the Aux jack, but after losing 2 of em, I went with the attached version.

The HK Radio on the bike will play CD's and MP3 files burned onto a Data CD. just burn them at the slowest speed, and around 192 bps.. you'll get around 225 songs on there. Media Monkey is a software program to equalize the volume levels across all songs. There's a couple threads involving this.

Riding in Germany, I'd definately get the heated grips and consider the heated gloves and vest.

Be aware.. if you go for the extended warranty, any options you add within the first 60 days are covered under the extended warranty.. after 60 days, it's only a year warranty.

riding Southern Germany is fantastic!..
Do a search on the Members list, location = Germany. there's some military on here who can give you more local info

I rode in Germany for 3 years. I rode everyday until the first snow. Watch out for cobble stone streets. They will get you if they are wet. I would get the ABS brakes if I were you. I just added Rush Slipons and screaming eagle air cleaner with Stage 1 download. You will be a KING over there. Most Germans ride mopeds and Sundap cycles. Great way to see Europe. Watch out for locals. They pull half way out of the narrow side streets to see if the road is clear. Makes you pucker sometimes. Heated grips and any other heated clothing is the only other mods. Watch out for loud pipes. Policie will get you. Also watch out behind you on the Autobahn. If you see someone flashing headlights behind you means get out of their way or they are going to kill ya.
Love to have my Ultra overthere. Ride safe.

HarleyLew,

HD makes it, It's a little bigger than most but you can not beat the comfort. If you do a search I'm sure you can find a pic of one around here somewhere. They are not cheap. I bought mine on ebay for 650 delivered for the leather one. The vinyl one can be had for about 100 less. What makes it special is that it has 3 air pockets than be inflated or deflated on the fly for maximum comfort.

I've got a Corbin seat on my Ultra. Long trips are a breeze. The seat is actually firmer than stock but they say that it's the support that's important, not the cushyness. I'm a believer.
