If he dont get that cleaned out real well ASAP, it will get infected. The entire area needs to be scrubbed with a solution of 50/50 beteadine/peroxide....scrubbing with a finger nail type brush or any other stiff bristle brush. Then because of the area of the wound it cant be properly dressed, so he will have to make sure he keeps it real clean at least until it scabs over.
When I was in my early 20's I had just finished installing a rebuilt engine in a Honda XL-500R dual purpose I was using to do motorcycle messenger work in NYC with. Well on my very first test ride I was so happy with the way she was running I put it on the back wheel for a bit....then I flipped over backwards ON THE STREET. I was working on the bike, and it was mid-Summer so I had no shirt on....shorts, and no helmet (at least I always wear boots though). I had so much road rash going all up and down my left side it wasn't funny. I didn't want to go to the hospital....THEN....but after a day or two it started getting infected because of all the dirt that was all embedded under my skin or what was left of my skin a few layers short. When I went to the ER the doc said this is going to hurt a moderate amount.....and then started scrubbing away at it like he was trying to scrub the rust off a old set of pipes. He said you probably wont be getting on a motorcycle again any time soon. I said...then how the hell am I gonna get home, my bike is parked outside.
