Default Lost key

This weekend I stopped at a gas station and after fueling called my wife before going on. Somehow I managed to lose the key during this but did not know it till about 150 miles later when I went to fuel up again. I went to the local Harley shop and they said they could order me a key but it would take a week. I was in a panic cause I had to be back to work (250 miles away) by tuesday. I asked the mechanic if there was a master key or a way to openeding the gas cap. He said no. I was not concerned about locking the bike but needed gas to get home. Luckily I found my extra key at the my house and was able to get back to San Antonio. So my question is can you open the fuel door on a Classic without the key?

Yes you can. Open the gas door and look down in the very front. You will see a small slot that is open to the front of the tank. You can slip something up from the front of the tank and trip the lock.

Also, I have read that any round key will open the lock.

Or you can do what I did and replace the lock with a push-button that is available at the dealer.

Pretty much any barrel key will unlock the gas cap. I have one from an old U-Lock type bicycle lock that works. I keep it in one of my lowers just in case. Not sure about opening the fuel door with out some type of key but do know that you can swap out the locking latch for a push button type that requires no key.

Any harley barrel key will work in your fuel door, I keep an old key in my tool bag for just this type of problem.

you can use any key of that style it is not a coded key. You must not have the alarm on your bike or the next gas fill would not have been a problem but getting there would be.

Yep. Or use a Bic pen. Just pull the plug out of the end and remove the ink tube. Jam the housing into the lock and turn.

Do a google search for something like "bic pen lock" and you'll see several links to info including youtube videos on how to do it.

When you do order another key it will be 71452-91A/ "your 4 digit key code here"
In the interim, as stated you can open it with a bic pen or anyone else's HD barrel key. Also might want to invest in the HD pushbutton fuel door release, can get either one that can be locked or one that is smooth and has no lock feature.
