Default exhaust heat shield solution

why would H/D have the stock exhaust heat shield NOT cover exhaust pipe near the heal of your boot as it sits on the floor board while riding? Is there a aftermarket cover for this area? I am better off just buying a complete new heat shield that covers it all? Thanks...

Kuryakyn makes a chrome cover that goes in underneath the two fatory heat shields. It looks pretty good and only costs about $30 v.s. the HD for around $100. Check the Kuryakyn webite it is on there.

Yep the Kuryakyn is a quality piece. Most dealers also carry it in their stores surprisingly enough.

Consensus seems to be that once again it's the marketing folks at HD giving you just enough and then being happy to sell you the piece to finish the job.

The one from Harley cost me $65. It is the entire shield opposed to just a 4" piece for $30. You're right, it's just another item that we need (should) buy to make the bike look like it should have from the factory.

Don't know the answer to your first question, but Harley has a custom exhaust shield in 2006 catalog # 65694-05, page 444 for $79.95 MSRP.

It good to see we all agree that the damn financial wizards at H/D continue to determine how to send a bike out the door versus the experienced rider or mechanic.

I am going with the H/D extension piece as I am pretty sure the cover was on there before.

Stuff like this torques me off! And even though I will eventually replace the entire exhaust system, I went ahead and ordered the H-D full length heat shield from Zanotti's, $62.76. Hope BountyHunter doesn't see this (LOL).

HD left that spot open so it is easier to get at with the sawzall. Chrome would just dull the blade!
