There used to be a link to an article on this site regarding break in with pictures to show what rings and pistons looked like when broken in the right way or the wrong way. Babying you bike too much is almost worse than breaking in too hard. The recommendation was to run the RPMs up a little in each gear, then let the bike slow down with engine braking to get the deceleration pressure also. If done right the break-in will be done within the first 50 miles. I started by running mine up to 3k rpms in the first 3 gears, then letting it slow without using other brakes, then up to 3.5k, then up to 4k and finally just under 4.5k. Then I just rode it more or less normally up to 100 miles.....then changed the engine oil and filter myself to get rid of any metal in the oil. Then the dealer did the 1k service and switched everything to Syn3. According to the article the most critical part of the break-in is the first 20-50 miles....don't redline it, but don't baby it either.
Is this the link?

My procedure,
Described by Joe Minton, of "American Rider" Magazine:
"Get to 3rd gear at around 30 MPH,
Apply full throttle till the speed reaches 60 MPH,
Close the throttle and coast back to 30 MPH,
Repeat nine more times,
Rings are now seated and you may ride normally,"
Article is in "American Rider" Magazine, October 2006, Page 67. An earlier magazine around 2002 gave the same description,
Did this to both of my engines at new and changed to Synthetic at 300 miles,

I changed to Royal Purple in all three hole with 3.2 miles on it......Course I put the cams in right away too......oh and the stage 1 and exhaust.......had 250 miles on it when Jamie at Fuelmoto Dynoed it at 6200 rpm's about 25 times to set up the PCIII........
Blah blah blah........."break it in" the way you want.... I varied the speed the first 50 miles and started driven it like I have all summer....... Not an issue or a drop of oil used.

Good point. The problem is you could go into most dealers and ask ten different people the same question and get ten different answers.

Your dealer needs to take some classes on oil and engines. As said, he sells CVO models that come with full synthetic in the engine from HD. So, the other engines are not as good?? No, you can put synthetic in the engine as soon as you get it home. That old wives tale of engines not breakng in with synthetic is just that, a wives tale. Many vehicles come from the factory with synthetics, so do those engines never break in? Of course not. Just do it, look him in the eye when he tells you his little bit of wisdom and tell him "Do a little bit a research before you preach"
