I missed the 'highway robbery' part of the story.
(I will wait for the movie I guess.)

To paraphrase a trade-in........your bike is always worth more than
someone will give you. THEIR bike is worth less than YOU want to pay.
They will lower their price 5% and offer you 20% less than what you want
for yours.
They raise their offer to 7%, and lower yours to 23%!!!!! YOU say "It's a DEAL!"
and they get more than they first offered. BUt if they give you two free T-shirts.....that is $40 right there! LOL

I just traded an 07 wide glide, bone stock, with just over 14,000 miles, for an 09 Ultra classic and got 14,000 for it. This is at an MSRP dealer that had no additional markup on the ultra over what was listed on HD's website. That gives me some indication that they could probably do considerably better on what you were wanting to trade, than what they offered you.

I personally wouldn't do it unless you're having problems with your bike and were looking to upgrade anyways. Performance won't be any different... I would have picked a full fairing bike to begin with though.

In a nut shell dealers seem to buy used at Kelly BB trade in value and sell at the Kelly BB resale value. The best way as the owner is a private sale. I think 1)the economy sux 2) the markey is flooded. I may be wrong too.

About 6 months ago a friend wanted to trade his 2 bikes in for a new 2008 Ultra. We compared the offers from the dealership and they were dead on KBB trade in value. It would have been a deal except dealer wanted him to purchase the VIP on top of it all. It was a no go.

Default Highway Robbery

I also was thinking of trading in my 08 FLHTC with 4300 miles on it for an 09 FLHTCU because I felt I should have gotten ABS and maybe the Ultra as It has the fairing lowers. From what I have read on this forum and after taking the bike an 09 for a test ride on the dealers demo days I changed my mind because to tell ya the truth I really wasnt blown away after the test ride, In fact I was dissapointed by all the hype!!!! Sure the 09 ran a little cooler, and handled a little better, and the rear tire is nice, but to say it was worth losing 4K on my bike, I bought it for 18.3K and probably would get about 13K on the trade then having to give the dealer the 08 and at least 6K I dont see the point. I know a lot of you will say that I shouldnt even have a bike If Im only gonna ride it the seven months Ive had it, and put less than 5K your right but thats my sanity my escape from the Old Lady, and the job!! Life is short Ill Ride as Much as I can!!! my 2 cents thanks BV

I agree 100% with UltraCla$$ic's post.

However, if you really want to trade you need to give them some hard numbers. Offer $8000 out the door and buy it or get over it.

Of course it's highway robbery. After the dealer gets done you will be able to do deep knee bends over a fire hydrant!

If you would accept $14,000.00 trade in why not list on EBAY for $15,000 no reserve and see what happens?

I'm sure Street Glides are an easy sell and the buyer has limited bargaining power.

I was offered 11,400 by multiple dealers on the 07 Heritage I was trading in on my SG. I sold it for over 5000.00 more myself.

Be patient, there is always next year. I hear the 2010's will have a 103 stock!
