Default Re-Torque Fairing Screws

I had my outer fairing off a while back and when I put it back together I torqued all seven screws to 30in. lbs. with an inch pound torque wrench.

I checked them today and everyone of them was loose. Re-torqued them.

Any of you guys use blue loctite on them?
I am concerned that the loctite might cause the female inserts to come loose when you try to remove the screws the next time?
The female inserts seem to have a history of coming loose anyway and I don't want to help them along.

Or, I could just check them every now and then and re-torque as needed.

Thanks!

I think the key is to not overdo it with the loctite. Just a drop does the trick in most situations.

Side question for you - how hard was it to get the fairing off and then back on again? I want to upgrade my speakers, change out a gauge, and maybe put on a headlight modulater. I figure I'll do all at once to only have to mess with the fairing once. I'm not the most mechanically inclined guy in the world so I got the Fix My Hog DVD and, of course, they make it look easy! Am I getting all worked up over no big deal?

You might also have your torque wrench calibrated to check that 30 in. lbs setting is what the wrench is actually giving you.

Real easy to do...Cover your front fender, take out the three screws that hold the windshield in and remove windshield. put the center screw back in finger tight.
Remove the 4 inside screws, then go back around front and holding onto the outer fairing remove the center screw and the fairing will come loose.
Now while supporting the fairing you will need to unplug the headlight.
That's all there is to it!
Hope this helps you out. And I almost forgot, make sure you check out the bracket inside to make sure they are not broke.

Hey kjmorgan...

It's a piece of cake! I did the same thing several weeks ago. Speaker upgrade, Kisan modulator, HD XM unit, new painted inner fairing, oil temp gauge...it looks great and sounds a whole lot better!

BTW...while you have the fairing off put some DynaMat on the inside of the front half of the fairing to reduce resonance! It makes a big difference!

It's a new Snap-on Inch pound touque wrench. I figure it is correct.

if loctite scares you try some silicone and put a dab on each screw
