synthedic oil or regular oil

I use Mobil one 15w50 synthetic in my engine. I'm told it's not necessary to get the special "v-twin" oil that they sell. I've had it in mine since new and lots of guys use it. Got almost 8,000 miles already (been 9 months) and no problem. I use 75w140 syn in the trans and plain jane 10w40 in the primary. Ride on!

Not to debate as I don't care what others use, but to set the record straight. Mobil 1 V Twin 20/50 for the engine is better. Some people use the regular Mobil 1 car oil but it lacks the necessary additive packages (one being moly that is an anti wear agent) to stand up to the heat of the Harley air cooled engine which runs much hotter than the car counterpart because of the water cooling. Regular may be adequate, but there is a difference. It is worth it to me, but then to each his own.

On the newer twin cams there are small holes that spray a fine mist onto the underside of the pistons. It helps cool the engine. A full synthetic is going to keep those small openings flowing oil. I do not use Mobile 1 but would highly recommend the V twin specific oil. Nearly the same sometimes is the same as not quite right. For a few extra dollars you get the best that company has to offer.
