Default 5000 mile oil change - question

Will be doing 5000 mile oil change shortly. Do you normally change primary and trans oil as well at that time. I ask because service intervals shows primary change at 10000 and tranny at 20000 miles - only oil at 5000.

Thanks

If you're running a good synthetic tranny oil then you can change every 10k. With the primary fluid I would change it out at 5k along with the crankcase.

Look, we're talking about 2 quarts here. CHANGE IT!! It's worth it after 5K to know you've got clean fluids in each hole. Not even a question in my opinion.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't do the primary and trans fluid change....for 20 to 30 bucks and a bit of time it is a cheap investment in a big investment.

Change primary oil since clutch debris contaminates it and leave the xmission oil until 10k. Of course, it aint hard to do and aint that expensive so you could do it for the sake of symmetry.

Who did your 1000? Had mine done at the stealer. I checked the fluids when I got home. The tranny was not reading on the stick. I'll be changing everything when I put her away for the winter.

I change all three every 5K. It is easy to do and doesn't cost much compared to the benefit.

I follow manufacturer's recommendations in the manual. I have been doing this for over forty years on all my vehicles, including five Harleys. I just did the 5k on my FLHRS and only changed the engine oil and filter. Always works for me.

If you are paranoid or like overkill or it just makes you feel good, change 'em all. It won't hurt anything (unless you strip a thread).
