Since you cant visually see a bend in the rim(s),get yourself a dial indicater and stand and check the run out. This will show any variation in the wheels. You said the wheels are laced, spokes?
If so check for loose/broken spokes.
Are the steering head bearings tight?

Put the bike on the jack and put a stationary object next to the wheel/tire, (anything...board, brick, bucket....anything). Now turn the wheel to see if it is true. You won't have to spin it fast. If it is bent you will know it. You can check radial and lateral run out. Crude but effective.

Maybe everthing else is okay, including the rims, but some belts are broke in the tire(s)?

SG1- good thought. Will try that out this week.

Comp claims get you dinged by your insurance, I had a comp claim on my snowmobile back in 2004 and it just cleared my insurance record this year, so I really don't need any more insurance rate hikes, rates are bad enough here in IL as it is- and my record is clean.

If I can get out to the hole during daylight this week, I'll try to take some photos and file a police report anyway. Just kills me all these taxes on our property, taxes for gas use, tax this, tax that, and they can't keep the roads at least patched, let alone paved....

Maybe you can file a claim with your states hwy. dept.At least it's worth a try.

I had hit a cavern on the freeway a while back ago.No damage, but I did call Caltrans and reported the location. The hole was filled two days later.
