Lost valve stem core on front at 75mph...
#13
I am trying to remember where I saw it (last two weeks) but there has been a major recall of valve stems made in (Guess where) China. The rubber was incorrectly formulated and after a short period it breaks down resulting in cracking of the stem and instant tire pressure loss. I understood the issue was only with car tires but perhaps MC stems are involved. There is at least one court case pending. I will try to track down the link and post it

Re my recent posting on valve stem problems see http://blogs.consumerreports.org/saf...alve-stem.html or do a google on valve stem failures

What sucks these days is the you have to double check all work done on your bike...unless you do it yourself! There is no more pride in workmanship at all. When I attended my first motorcycle mechanics school back in 1981 one of the first things they would teach us was that as MC techs we were almost like aircraft techs. If we do something incorrectly it could cause a death or very serious injury. The kids today have no concept of this at all.
I double check anything I may have sent out to be done.....and triple check my own work!

valve stems
as a master tech all valve stems should be replaced every time the tire comes off the rim (that also includes the metal ones). also today more mistakes hapen because the techs need to get things done fast. they are paid flat rate and need to get things in and out FAST or they work for free. Thats in the auto world but im sure its the same in the cycle world. Its all about the company making as much money as they can.

Once I got over the scared phase, then came the pissed off phase. Then, I spent so much time on the phone with the roadside assistance people that I shifted my pissed offedness (is that a word?) to them. My insurance renewed the same day and the info hadn't been forwarded to them. Then, they couldn't find where I was on their maps. I spent at least an hour and a half on the phone with them. It was almost 3 hours after the incident before we were on the road.
The time for getting really pissed is when or if I don't get properly compensated for all my expenses... and I want the 140 tire on the rear that I was supposed to get. If I get that, the rest will go down as an experience. Otherwise, the credit card company will get the call. If I don't get satifaction there, it may be time to pursue other options.

Beeracuda,
First, I'd still be sitting on the poop bucket, with a second one under my chin. You are both lucky and a great motorcycle rider.
Second, I'd probably call the credit card company and get a conversation on record. It might be a longer issue than you'd think.
Anyway, glad you're alright.
