Best Way To Lower Gear Ratio?
#12
I think EG and Rocknrod may be talking about two different kits from EVO Industries.
The first is the 30 tooth motor sprocket that takes out the compensator and the second is the 49 tooth clutch sprocket.
Rocknrod, will you clearify which kit you are refering.
Losing the 6th gear light wouldn't bother me, but losing cruise control would.

I think it's a matter of semantics. Many people refer to lower gearing as higher rpms at a given speed. Lower gearing by this definition means a higher number ratio. 3.37 is lower geared than 3.15. That's the way I see it and apparantly so do you.
Some people refer to it the way hogdoc did but pretty sure he means the same thing.

Here's what I'm going to try, a 68 tooth pulley on the rear from a Sportster. Bolts right on, and if the belt has some miles on it, no longer belt is needed. Raises RPM about 200 over stock. I think its $120 from Surdyke when I checked. Supposedly it won't affect the CC. The only thing is that it throws off the speedometer. I think the dealer can recalibrate it, but I haven't checked.

Do the calculations 2800rpm * (32/66) * (68/32) = 2885rpm
Less than what you want, about 3% increase in rpms at the motor.
A 32 tooth front pulley will give you a 187rpm rise in motor rpm
2800 * (32/66) * (66/30) = 2987rpm or about 6.6% increase.

Has anyone tried using Evo's 49 tooth clutch sprocket/ring gear instead of scrapping the compensator sprocket? You go up 3 teeth on the clutch gear instead of down 4 teeth on the comp, but you keep the peace of mind that comes with keeping the compensator sprocket installed.

I had the same question. I don't like the idea of loosing the compensator on the motor end. There seems there may be a problem with cruise control and the 6th gear light with the 49 tooth sprocket. It would be great to get a definative answer on this otherwise I'm leaning toward the final drive front pulley by Andrews.

Don't know why I didn't do a stupid search. Duh. Anyway, I knew the 6th gear light would go away since the computer uses mph and rpm to tell the light to come on, but I don't see why the cruise wouldn't work. Like Rod said earlier, he lost the light, but not the cruise and he has an '08.
I'm trying to think it out in my head right now, but there shouldn't be any difference between dropping teeth on the front and adding them on the back. The ratio will change either way. The transmission will turn slower relative to the engine rpm with either sprocket change, no?
I might shoot them an email and see what their response has been from customers about it.
