Default Cam Chain Tensioner

First of all, new to the form so just thought I'd say hello. I've got 14,000 miles on my 2005 Road King Classic, bought it used a year ago. I need to know what a loose or warn cam chain tensioner sounds like, for the last hundred miles Ive herd a noise under high RPM deceleration, a buddy of mine told me that it was warn cam chain tensioner. Any and all advise is appreciated.

I tend to doubt it's your cam shoes at 14K but you never know I guess. There have been a few cases of them wearing that early but very few. My bet would be a loose drive belt or Primary chain but it's hard to say not knowing what the noise is.

good luck

Has any one ever heard of a bad bearing, or possibly a oil pump making a noise like that. I took it to Harley to see what they thought about it, they said don't do high RPM decelerations so i got a service manual. Witch told me about the crankshaft bearing and the oil pump. any more suggestions?

High RPM deceleration is bad for your crank, don't do it.

My cam chain tensioner let go someplace in the teens, I'd have a peek at it if I were you, and do a search here; you'll find there are all sorts of failures with those things. Other than that, use that manual and check the tension of the primary while you're at it.

The problem is there's two of them. You can see the outer one easy when you take the cam cover off. The inner cam tensioner is not so easy to see. You might be able to use a small mirror and flashlight to get a look see at it. Here's my advice to you. Take the inspection cover off of the primary and check to make sure the primary chain is not loose first. If that is fine and you are going to go through the hassle of taking the right side exhaust off (stock pipes?), floor board, and open it up to check the tensioner shoes, you might as well stick a set of gear drive cams in there IF you plan on keeping this bike for a while. JMO. Have you ever done any kind of internal motor work before? Where do you live? Maybe someone in your area can wrench it for you for a good price.

I have the Vance and Hines Dresser Duels. I have never worked on a Harley motor before, but I have a good set of tools and a service manual. The noise is definitley coming from the right side but ill check the primary chain before I get any farther.

Thanks Allot!
