Need some opinions please,
I just sold my Roadsters and I知 ready to order a 2009 Electra Glide Classic. I have decided on all the options I want except for one. I知 having a problem deciding if I should stay stock and just do a Stage 1 upgrade or do I spend a little more cash and upgrade to either the Scream in' Eagle Big Bore Stage I Kit - 103ci or the Scream in' Eagle 110 Cubic Inch Stage I Kit and what exhaust should I have installed? I would like to take delivery with all the options I select installed so that there will not be any warranty issues.
All my buddies said that I would not keep the Roadster very long and of course I disagreed with them however, they were right. So I want to order my Electra Glide right the 1st time.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated about the 103ci or 110ci and the exhaust. I plan to keep this bike for a long time and want to do it right.
Thanks,
HeliRider

I think I'd wait on doing anything until you have a few miles on it. As long as you have the goodies fitted by your dealer the warranty should still be good no matter what. There aren't any full exhaust systems available yet for the '09s. From what I have heard and read here, it seems as though you might be better off with the 103 set up than 110.

On the warranty:
IF and ONLY IF, you use 100 percent Screamin eagle Kits, INTACT, and install prior to delivery, it should be covered.
But that kit requires you to use stock mufflers, and a ECM flash reprogram. You MUST use both. If you change pipes, or use any other tuner, including the SERT, your DONE for warranty. If you were to go to the Stage 2 (with cams) then you have to use their Catalytic mufflers as well. (aka, stuffed up)
IMHO, to do the 103 in the fashion it requires to maintain warranty, is a waste of money. When I did my 103" 07, I added the SERT, and V&H duals with slip-ons. So even though I did it before delivery, I had no warranty other that my dealer standing behind it, because I "altered" their kit.
I hashed this all out with my service manager, prior to buying the 09.
For what its worth, my numbers were/are:
2007 stage 2 (WITH cams) 103" with V&H true duals/ovals and SERT/Dyno tune:
79 HP, 101 ft lbs. (without the stage 2 cams the torque would be lower)
2009 with stock headers, V&H monster ovals, heavy breather intake, SERT/dyno tune:
78 HP, 90 ft lbs.
While I enjoyed my 07 103", with the new gearing of the 09's Im more than happy with the performance of the 96. I think Im gonna stay out of the motor and keep the warranty on this one. (of course, they could hose me just for having the SERT) Also, you said stage 1 big bore (without cams) which is gonna be down even further on torque, as opposed to doing the Stage 2. And maybe the CAMS being left out of the mix may change the warranty issue, but at that point, I REALLY don't think your getting a good power return on your dollar.
If I were to do the 103" again, I would harbor NO illlusions that I would have any warranty coverage, because no way would I do it with their stock (Stage 1) or stuffed up CAT mufflers (stage 2) and lean ECM flash, as opposed to a good set of pipes, and a SERT/dyno tune.
As for the 110" I would not touch that with a 10 foot pole. Too many guys having issues with that motor coming from the FACTORY that size, much less a retrofit "in the field" so to speak.

For what it's worth, I recommend leaving the damn thing alone. I just put on 7,000 miles across country on my stock 2008 Ultra. Not a single problem, comfortable, plenty of power down the road, and me and wife had a great trip. I read on this forum time and time again about guys who modify their bikes and all too often spend the next few years complaining about weird consequential problems, denied warranty claims, etc. It's a great bike out of the box. Those engineers are pretty smart guys and I'd trust their handywork unless you're determined to dump money into the bike and possibly mess it up. Enjoy it.

Upgrades?
In my opinion and from what I have read, if you do any upgrades 103 or 110 you will likely be covered by the selling dealer only. I had a similar choice to make and decided to go with a 107 which, frankly outperforms the 110. However my 107 was done by an Indy so my engine warranty is out the door, except that he warranteed it which is the same as if a local HD dealer warranteed it. At any rate if you read this forum very long you will find that that the 103 is really not what you want... the 110 is quite nice but there are others (independent) that are quite as good or better for less money. I've had a couple of warranty claims on my 08 and it was no problem because it was not related to the engine.

I had an 07 that I put a "well built" 103 in. Heads, big cams, rollers, 2 into 1, etc, etc. The bike had some decent power, but it was all at 2800 and above. Basically useless riding 2up in the mountains. I also got 35 mpg on a real good day and 32 on average days. With a 5 gallon tank, it sucked.
I now have an 09 with a stage one with Python slip ons. There is no way I will be doing anything else to the motor. With the retoothed pulley on the 09's the torque comes in lower and the bike is way better for everyday riding and touring than the built 07 ever was.
My advice.....think long and hard before you toss your cash down that "bigger badder motor" hole.

If you wanna do it right the first time, I'd suggest an Ultra now instead of an EGC
